Bob Cranshaw

Bass player

If I was playing football, I’d be the blocker. I block for the good guys who can really play solos. I block for them so they can run. You know, I’m gonna open the hole for you. And that’s what I feel as a player. You know, I’m an excellent follower. I’m an excellent group player. I enjoy playing with a group, without somebody saying, Bob Cranshaw is this or he’s that.

I go to a gig and play the gig, and when the gig is over, I’m gone. And people are looking around, saying, “Where’s Bob Cranshaw?” I’m not a hanger. I do what I do, and I’m gone. I don’t need to stay around to get the accolades. I really don’t care about all of that. I don’t want people to pat me on the back. You know, I’m a participant, and that’s all I want to be. I don’t want to be the leader of a band.

When I do jobs at the union, they call me to be a leader, they want me to put together a group, and I’ll put together a group for a function that we’re having, but I won’t make myself the leader. The leader is supposed to get extra money; I don’t even want that. I wanna split the money equally because we’re all leaders. That’s my thing: We’re all leaders.
