Just because a person does one thing very well doesn’t mean that’s all he does. Ev- erybody does a bit of everything. And “swing” is such a wide term, that it’s really unfair to say that what Teddy did was always representative of swing. Writers shouldn’t fall for all of that. The record companies and some critics try to simplify things, but it’s not that simple. “Swing” music, for example, includes almost everybody you can think of. You have to question all of those definitions. It’s actually not fair to the players, who have to be versatile just to make a living.
