Down Beat reviewed me once [saying] that I was inflexible in Philadelphia but I couldn’t care less. I guess it was a group talking and I wanted to get in a dream world, but now you bring . . . and then I was going to say Mingus would lecture his audiences. And sometimes at the Half Note, people would be . . . it wasn’t just a sneeze, or “could I have another glass of wine?” Jazz getting so esoteric, and we have to have a Kleenex, and if there’s a piece of peanut spilled on a table, it has to be so immaculate.
